The dataset contains raw data supporting the article ‘Solar-driven Methanogenesis through Microbial Ecosystem Engineering on Carbon Nitride’. This work demonstrates a cooperative interaction between two microbes Geobacter sulfurreducens KN400 and Methanosarcina barkeri via direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) when assembled on a photosensitiser carbon nitride to develop a semi-biological photocatalyst system. It introduces an ecosystem engineering strategy in photocatalysis to drive sunlight-driven sustainable chemical synthesis from greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. The dataset is divided into five key parts: i) Biohybrid Assembly: Contains schematic representation of the novel biohybrid system, ii) Electrochemistry: Electrochemical characterisation of the biohybrid assembly, iii) Materials Characterisation: Physical characterisation of each synthetic and biological component of the biohybrid assembly, iv) Photocatalysis: Photocatalytic performance of the biohybrid system under sunlight irradiation, and v) Spectroscopy: UV-Visible spectroscopic characterisation, and isotopic labelling experiments using proton NMR spectroscopy.
