RWC (Real World Computing Music Database)

The RWC (Real World Computing) Music Database is a copyright-licensed music database (DB) that serves as a shared research foundation for researchers. It was developed by the RWC Music Database Sub-Working Group of the Japanese Real World Computing Partnership (RWCP). All necessary copyrights and related legal interests associated with this database belong to the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan, which has provided an unprecedented level of music data sharing for the global research community. The database will be distributed to researchers at a nominal cost, covering only the expenses for reproduction, transportation, and processing — that is, effectively free of charge.

The RWC Music Database is the world’s first large-scale music database specifically compiled for research purposes. Shared databases are common in other academic research fields and often make significant contributions to the advancement of those disciplines. However, the field of music information processing lacks a universal database of musical works or a large-scale corpus of instrumental sounds. To fill this critical gap, we constructed the RWC Music Database, which consists of six original collections: the Popular Music Database (100 songs), the Royalty-free Music Database (15 songs), the Classical Music Database (50 songs), the Jazz Music Database (50 songs), the Music Genre Database (100 pieces), and the Instrumental Sound Database (50 pieces). For all 315 musical pieces performed and recorded for the database, we prepared raw audio signals, corresponding standard MIDI files, and lyric text files (for songs). For the 50 instrument types, we captured individual sounds at semitone intervals across diverse playing styles, dynamics, instrument manufacturers, and performing musicians. These collections will serve as a benchmark, enabling researchers to compare and evaluate their various systems and methods against a unified standard. The database can also be used to advance research on corpus-oriented approaches utilizing statistical methods and learning techniques. In all cases, researchers may use the database for research publications and presentations without any copyright restrictions. We anticipate that the RWC Music Database will make a substantial contribution to the future development of the field of music information processing.
