Nostoc 2RC is a photosynthetic, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium. This strain is filamentous and forms heterocysts in the absence of nitrogen. Its genome shows the presence of three nitrogenase systems, nif1, nif2, and vnf. 2RC is also heterotrophic and can use both glucose and fructose as a carbon source. Nostoc 2RC has the ability to infect Blasia, and has hormogonia genes homologous to those found in Nostoc punctiforme. Overall, Nostoc 2RC shares the most homology with Nostoc linkia strains in the Patric database.
