A strain which could decolorize Congo Red efficiently was isolated from Congo Red. The strain was identified as Paenibacillus dendritiformis GGJ7 (for short PD) based on 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The first time PD was applied to decolorization of azo dyes. The results demonstrated that decoloring effect of Congo Red was PD much higher than other eight strains (e.g. YRJ1,YRJ2 etc.). The optimal conditions of decolorization were 30℃ and pH7. The decolorization decreased with the concentration of Congo Red increasing. For different azo dyes, the decolorization attained 95%, PD only need 1 h for 50 mg/L methyl orange, 25 mg/L Croceine scarlet, 25 mg/L methyl red; PD only need 3h for 50 mg/L Orange G and 50 mg/L Orange G6; PD need 4 h for 50 mg/L Congo Red. In summary, PD is an efficient azo dyes decolorizing bacteria, and it has a development and application value in printing and dyeing wastewater treatment.
