THE ROLE OF ASSESSMENT IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Assessment is a fundamental component of foreign language teaching and learning. It serves not only as a tool for measuring learners’ linguistic competence but also as a means of guiding instruction, enhancing motivation, and improving overall learning outcomes. The study examines different types of assessment, including formative, summative, diagnostic, and alternative assessment, and analyzes their influence on learners’ performance, motivation, and autonomy. The findings suggest that effective and well-designed assessment practices significantly contribute to successful foreign language acquisition and support learner-centered pedagogical approaches.
