Samples were collected from a pilot-scale high rate biological nutrient removal bioreactor over 493 days of operation and 3 distinct operational phases where dissolved oxygen was decreased. The succession in nitrifying and phosphorus removing organisms as a result of decreasing DO was assessed with 16S rRNA gene targeted sequencing and was compared to the sequences obtained from the adjacent high-DO full-scale plant (Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment plant in Madison, WI).
