al-Battani: Opus Astronomicum / Kitab al-Zij, Text Working Edition and Audited Table Data

Work in progress. Nothing in this record is a finished or critical edition. The maintained source is now the GitHub repository github.com/KokunoYumeto/al-battani; corrections and issues go there. New in this version (2026-09-25, S01 v003). Files 50–53 now hold S01 v003, the revised transcription of Nallino's Part I front matter (frontispiece, preface, bibliography and addenda/corrigenda, printed pp. VII–LXXX): an 80-page reader, a separate four-page critical apparatus, the TeX source, and the complete package with ledgers, provenance, QA and the preserved v002 predecessor. Against v002 it records 85 source-checked decisions (71 text repairs and 14 exact-image substitutions) on 79 lines across 50 pages; ten hard-to-read spots are kept as exact source images rather than guessed, and an independent cold audit has still not been done. The v002 files remain in the previous version of this record. File 00 is an updated read-first note; all other files are carried over unchanged. Work-level record for al-Battānī's Opus Astronomicum / Kitāb al-Zīj. Earlier versions of this same Zenodo concept foregrounded the fixed-star catalogue; this version gathers the al-Battānī work package in one place without creating a second DOI for the same work. Status at a glance. The front-facing reader is the 251-page text working edition: the 100 body-text segments are represented as Arabic source with English and Chinese translations and current catalogue, geography, and chronology layers appended. It is useful as a readable working edition, but it is not a critical edition, not a final scholarly edition, and not every table has been placed back into its historical chapter location. The text should continue to be audited against Nallino as the edition is refined. The reliable current table/data layers include the fixed-star catalogue data layer, the geographical gazetteer data layer, and the partial chronology / Canon of Kings layer. The Nallino source witness, Nallino Pars I-III table witness, canonical v083 TeX/data/report package, table reference supplement, source-data/workflow package, and compact latest-notes package are included for checking and provenance. Table status is stated explicitly. The fixed-star catalogue is structurally represented at the current working-data level: 485 numbered star rows across 47 Ptolemaic figures, with ecliptic longitude and latitude values, north/south signs, magnitudes, modern identification fields, and the documented Escorial-codex lacuna shown in place. The geography gazetteer has 269 locality entries. The chronology layer is useful but partial; ancient regnal-year figures remain flagged for collation. Zodiac / terms / houses auxiliary tables are not cleanly tabulated in Nallino's Latin volume and are not fabricated here. Legacy filenames containing Complete Critical Edition are inherited labels and are not maintainer-certified critical-edition claims.
