Fossil lower beaks of Cretaceous squids

This file set includes fossil lower beaks of Cretaceous squids used in the publication “Origin and radiation of squids revealed by digital fossil-mining”. The detailed information on each beak (e.g., the taxonomic classification, occurrence, and measurements) is documented in tables S1 and S3 of this publication. The dataset for each beak (.zip) consists of a 3D model, label data, and cross-sectional images. The 3D models were reconstructed in Amira 6.2.0 (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc.) based on label data generated from the cross-sectional images of Cretaceous carbonate concretions, which were obtained by a grinding tomography system (Paleobiology Lab, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Hokkaido University). The cross-sectional images were cropped around each discovered beak fossil and then labelled in the IV-Seg (IVLab Co., Ltd.).
