I used five freshwater phytoplankton species common in North American lakes in this experiment.

Species represented two major phylogenetic divisions, several common growth forms, and varied in their ability to remain in the water column. Under the experimental conditions species varied in average cell biomass and edibility to the zooplankton herbivore (Daphnia pulicaria).
