We collected field measurements of background insect herbivory (BIH) from existing global or regional databases (Kozlov et al. 2015; Zhang et al. 2016; Mendes et al. 2021; Lynn et al. 2023; Tang et al. 2023), as well as from literature with a focus on the underrepresented regions in global databases. Our dataset includes 3,596 BIH measurements from 1,625 seed plant species across 1,375 geographically distinct locations, encompassing all major biomes in global terrestrial ecosystems.
