Edge zones in overbank areas along deep-cut channels, on rainfed plateaus, constitute vital farmlands in land-scarce agricultural regions. Soil moisture (SM), a critical constraint of local productivity, is typically lower in these zones than in the inner zones farther from the channels. However, to date, spatiotemporal dynamics of reduced SM in edge zones remain unquantified along deep-cut channels. Measurements of hourly SM were taken at 10, 40, and 70 cm depths, across three sites (at 3.5m, 7 m, and 11.5 m from the channel edge), during the 2023-2024 growing season of apple trees in the Weibei rainfed Plateau.
