Photograph (engineering notebook photoprint) looking south from 18th Street, Hermosa Beach (heavy rain), Los Angeles County. Note sand deposits next to beach walk and erosion about midway between walk and ocean. Tractor is grading water course for drainage from 17th Street.This was the result of a 6.2 tide on 9 January 1940 accompanied by heavy ground swells and 30 foot breakers which did considerable damage to piers and ocean front property between Newport Beach and Malibu. Also visible are: a few houses, pier, beach, ocean. No legible signs.
