The three exons of the DO/ART4 gene were PCR amplified from genomic DNA extracted from blood and sequenced for a total of 655 individuals collected from 11 African ethnic groups including both pygmoid (n= 51) and nonpygmoid (336) samples quite distinct anthropologically, providing a panel representing Sub –Saharan Africa, together with samples from blood donnors from Martinique Island, Maroons from Guyana and Comorian immigrants from Great Comore Island (Nagazidja) living in Marseille, France This large-scale study has allowed the identification of 13 novel alleles.
