The addition of surfactants (such as trion X-100) enhance the release of intracellular as well as cell-bound monascus pigments into the exteranl medium, by inhibiting the ergosterol synthesis and incearing the membrane permeability . From whole genome sequencing of M. purpureus LQ-6, gene ERG4 (encoding ergosterol reductase) was found and knockout.
