The epitope motif is repeated is present about 20 times in the lubricin protein sequence. The mAb 9g3 more weakly recognized variant peptide forms of the epitope, expressed as a fusion protein with a human IgG-Fc domain, on western blots. These included KEPAATTT, KEPAATT, PAATTT, and KEPAPTAT. MAbs 7h12, 6a8, and 5c11 did not react with peptides tested other than the epitope.
