Human embryos show high levels of DNA damage of unknown origin during early cleavage development. Here we investigate the origin of DNA damage in embryonic cell cycles, and determine the sites of spontaneous chromosome breakage in human cleavage stage embryos. These studies are important to understand the cause of embryo loss, genetic change and abnormal development in our species.
