NRS-13024 | Registers of letters received [Land Titles Branch, Registrar General]

Prior to 1912 the letters received dealt with matters having some formal application or dealing with land. There was a 'Register based on the progressive numbers which were given to letters in order of receipt. Unless renumbered as and "E.B." (ie. Examiner's Branch matter), "Order" (ie. for a new Certificate of Title), etc. the progressive number of the latest letter received in relation to a particular subject remained the file number and cross referencing would be made by "marking up" the last previous letter (if any) to the latest letter and "marking back" the latest letter to the last previous letter. Entries in the Register were of the letter number, file number (where necessary), writer's name and address, date of the letter, a precis of its contents, immediate destination of the file and a reference to final action taken.'
