Nitrobacter laanbroekii NHB1 is a novel acidophilic lithotrophic nitrifier (assumed faculatative) with relatively high affinity for nitrite. It been demonstrated previously to facilitate the growth of a neutrophilic ammonia-oxidising bacterium at low pH when grown as a consortium. As an isolate it has an optimum pH 5.0-6.0 depending on the nitrite concentration of the medium with growth can be sustained down to pH 3.5.
