Bacillus subtilis mainly produces a series of menadione homologues from MK-4 to MK-8, with MK-7 accounting for up to 96%. Bacillus subtilis is considered to be the best strain for the production of vitamin K2 by fermentation, with the characteristics of generally recognized as safe (GRAS), high growth rate and relatively easy gene manipulation, which has the potential for large-scale production of MK-7. The whole genome of a strain of Bacillus subtilis from commercial natto preserved in our laboratory was sequenced, hoping to explore the genes related to the production of MK-7.
