Identification of genetic mutations to acquire tolerance to the fermentation inhibitor in xylose-utilizing yeast. Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain:IR-2 B16

One important issue in the commercial production of the cellulosic ethanol (2nd gen. bio-ethanol) is the effect of fermentation inhibitory compounds derived from the pre-treated biomass on xylose-utilizaing yeast. The purpose of this project is to introduce spontaneous mutations into the genome and to establish xylose-utilizing yeast strains with tolerance to any fermentation inhibitory compounds and is to clarify the responsible gene mutations through comparative whole genome analyses of strains which acquired these tolerance.
