Mycobacterium chubuense is a soil-living, motile mycobacterium with the capacity to degrade chlorinated aliphatic compounds and can use a wide range of hydrocarbons as growth substrates. It has the potential for use in bioremediation of contaminated soils, but it also has immune-stimulatory capacity towards cancer cells. It is fast growing, mesophilic, pigmented, and has a coccoid morphology. The genome of the M. chubuense NBB4 biodegrading strain has been recently determined, so by sequencing the genome of the type strain, DSM 44219, we hope to learn about the evolution of closely related strains and other interesting properties.
