Coaches of athletes, both with and without intellectual impairments (II), were recruited between January and May 2021 through various channels such as sports organizations, recreational centres, and sports clubs. The recruitment process involved phone calls and emails. Eligible coaches needed to be fluent in English, have at least one year of coaching experience, and work with adolescent or adult athletes aged 12 and above, regardless of whether they had II. The coaches were asked to complete questionnaires through an online platform called JISC. All participating coaches completed questionnaires, which took approximately 20 minutes to complete.

These questionnaires focused on the following aspects:
Sports Performance Progression (coaches' perceptions): Coaches reported on the athletes' progress in the physical, tactical, technical, and psychological domains over the past year.
Athletes' sports motivation (coaches' perceptions): Coaches provided their perspectives on the reasons why athletes participate in sports, based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT).
Interpersonal behaviours (coaching styles): Coaches reported on their own interpersonal behaviours in sports settings, also based on the SDT.
