VPRS 12000 Magistrates' Court Marriage of Minors, Applications Register

In certain circumstances, persons considered too young to be married (i.e., minors) were permitted to marry with the consent of their parents and a stipendiary magistrate. Often the individuals concerned had been married legally overseas, but their marriage was not recognised in Australia because of their age.Applications were made under section 12 or 16 of the Marriage Act 1961.Although this volume includes the personal details of each hearing including the case number, the names of the applicants and other parties, the relevant section of the Marriage Act and the determination of the magistrate, there is an informality of presentation not found in other court registers. Such cases may have been heard in a less formal manner, perhaps before a Magistrate in chambers.
