AsabackgroundforthisGuidanceManual(GM),the5thOECDWPMNplenarymeetingagreed toestablishaSteeringGroup(SG9)tolookintothepotentialofapplicationsbasedontheuseof manufacturednanomaterialstoaddressmajorenvironmentalchallengessuchasclimatechange,pollution ofwater,soil,andair,andnaturalresourcedepletion,aswellasthepotentialnegativeimpactsthatsuch newtechnologiesmayhaveonenvironmentandhealth.SG9’smainfocusisenhancingtheknowledge baseaboutlifecycleaspectsofmanufacturednanomaterials,aswellaspositiveandnegativeimpactson environmentandhealthofcertainnano-enabledapplicationsattheirdifferentstagesofdevelopment.As partofitsprogrammeaworkshopwasheldontheEnvironmentallySustainableUseofManufacturedNanomaterials.Thiseventtookplaceon14September2011inRome,Italy.Itsbasicobjectiveswereto furtherimprovetheinternationalscientificdialogueinthefieldoflife-cycleaspectsofmanufactured nanomaterials.Itsmainoverallconclusionswereasfollows:?Lifecycleanalysis(LCA)perseisanimportanttoolforprovidingaframeworktoevaluatethe negativeandpositiveenvironmentalimplicationsofaproduct,process,ortechnologythatcanalso beemployedfornanomaterials.However,itmustbeappliedthoughtfully,keepinginmindthe applicationsofnanomaterials,inordertoprovideanswersthatwillbeusefultodecision-makers.?ItiskeyestablishinglinkagesbetweenLCAandriskassessment(Flemströmetal.2004),sinceany LCAworkinggroupwillneedriskassessmentinformationtocompleteanLCA.Giventhefact thatthereisnoconceptoffunctionalunitinriskassessment,suchlinkagescanonlybeestablished ifbothLCApractitionersandriskassessorssharetheLCAobjectivesorproblemformulationand iterativeresultswitheachother.?Inlinewithothernano-LCAworkgroups,theISO14040/44frameworkisasuitableharmonized, user-friendlyandvalidatedframeworkapplicabletonanomaterialsandnanotechnology.
