Calm (2025)

"Calm" is a short piece composed by Stephen Krol using their AI creativity support tool, Rhapsody Refiner. Designed in collaboration with musicians, Rhapsody Refiner generates musical variations to support the exploration of new ideas. Calm emerged during a particularly frustrating stage of the system’s development. Built on a simple foundation, alternating between Cmaj7 and Fmaj7, the piece gradually evolved, with additions inspired by Rhapsody Refiner’s outputs. The result is a more intricate composition than originally conceived, demonstrating how the system can guide users toward unexpected musical directions.
