Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum strain N1-4 (ATCC 27021), a Gram-positive, anaerobic spore forming organism, is known as a butanol-hyperproducing bacterium. Various organic compounds are fermented, such as glucose, fructose, saccharose, xylose and cellobiose, but also sorbitol, dulcitol and inositol. The industrial strains of C. saccharoperbutylacetonicum are used in the fermentation processes for the production of the solvents acetone, butanol, and ethanol from a variety of sugar- and starch-based substrates.
