NHS England: Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Maternity Dataset

This dataset is a subset of the HES Admitted Patient Care (APC) dataset. Maternity data are also collected in the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). Some measures are available in both (e.g. ethnicity of the mother and the baby’s birth weight) and some are unique to one specific data set (e.g. only the MSDS collects the mother’s smoking status and the first feed information, while only HESAPC_MAT collects the length of hospital stay and the number of babies delivered per pregnancy). In reports, HESAPC_MAT data are used for the national totals, because they have historically been more complete.
