In 1984, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Office of Marine Geology, launched a program using the Geological LOng-Range Inclined Asdic (GLORIA) sidescan-sonar system to study the entire U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). From 1989 through 1991, the USGS and IOS (Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, U.K.) scientists conducted several surveys within the EEZ off Hawaii. Six surveys during that time period focused on the northwestern Hawaii region. The results of these surveys were 22 digital mosaics of approximately a 2 degree by 2 degree area with a 50-meter pixel resolution.1984年，美国地质调查局（U.S. Geological Survey, USGS）海洋地质办公室启动了一项研究计划，采用地质远程倾斜声呐成像系统（Geological LOng-Range Inclined Asdic, GLORIA）侧扫声呐系统，对美国全部专属经济区（U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, EEZ）开展调研。1989年至1991年间，美国地质调查局与英国海洋科学研究所（Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, U.K., IOS）的科研人员在夏威夷周边的专属经济区内完成多轮勘测，其中6次勘测聚焦夏威夷西北部海域。本次勘测的成果为22幅数字镶嵌图，单幅图像覆盖范围约为2°×2°，像素分辨率达50米。
