The goal of this study was to assess the effect of plant-associated fungi on drought-affected soil microbial communities. We used quantitative stable isotope probing (qSIP) with 18O-enriched water and 16S rRNA gene profiling to investigate hyphosphere bacterial community dynamics following three months of water limitation in the presence or absence of Rhizophagus irregularis or Serendipita bescii, which were grown in a 'marginal' soil with the bioenergy grass model Panicum hallii.
