Hanging Houses (Casas Colgadas)

The hanging houses can be considered the most famous and representative civil buildings of Cuenca's vernacular architecture. They are the most unique and special typology of traditional architecture in Cuenca. They have now been completely transformed, showing the passing of time, human intervention, and the idea of what this extraordinary group of buildings once was in the gorge of the Huécar river. These buildings date from the first half of the 15th c., with Ferrando de Madrid reported as the first known owner, followed by licenciado Gil Ramírez de Villaescusa, canon of Cuenca Cathedral.
