Whole genome sequencing of the Francisella -Om strain. This intracellular bacterium is a maternally inherited symbiont of the African soft tick Ornithodoros moubata. Ticks rely on vertebrate blood as their only food, but this diet is limited in B vitamins. In the African soft tick, the use of this unbalanced diet is possible because Francisella F-Om is able to synthetize missing nutrients: this nutritional symbiont is essential for tick’s growth and survival to adulthood.
