VPRS 16201 Supreme Court Interstate Adoption Register (Born Interstate and Adopted in Victoria)

This series contains a register of adoption orders received by the Prothonotary of the Supreme Court of Victoria of children born interstate and adopted in Victoria, as well as any associated correspondence. Correspondence received from other state authorities was then forwarded to the Office of the Government Statist and Actuary (VA 989), and from 1983 the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (VA 983). Further correspondence may be found in VPRS 11688 Correspondence Files (Interstate Adoptions). The Adoption of Children Amending Act 1942 and equivalent acts in other jurisdictions authorised the transmission of copies of adoption orders made in Victoria concerning children born in other States or Territories. Under reciprocal agreements entered into between States and Territories of the Commonwealth, the Supreme Court (through the Prothonotary) was responsible for sending copies of adoption orders for children born outside of Victoria to the respective state agencies responsible for the administration of adoptions.
