Diabetic retinopathy is the most prevalent cause of avoidable visual impairment, primarily affecting the global working-age population. Recent research has enhanced understanding of the requirements in clinical eye care practices to develop better, more cost-effective approaches for retinal disease recognition, management, diagnosis, and treatment. The significance of diabetic retinopathy screening programs and the challenge of achieving reliable early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy at a reasonable cost have highlighted the need for developing computer-aided diagnostic tools. Computer-aided disease diagnosis through retinal image analysis can streamline large-scale screening of diabetic populations and assist clinicians in utilizing their time more efficiently. Recent technological advances in computing power, communication systems, and machine learning have provided biomedical engineers and computer scientists with opportunities to meet the demands of clinical practice. Diverse and representative retinal image datasets are critical for developing and validating digital screening programs and the automated algorithms that underpin them. To the best of our knowledge, the IDRiD (Indian Diabetic Retinopathy Image Dataset) is the first dataset representative of the Indian population to address this challenge. Additionally, it is the only dataset that contains both typical diabetic retinopathy lesions and normal retinal structures annotated at the pixel level. This dataset provides information on the severity of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema for each image, making it highly suitable for the development and evaluation of image analysis algorithms for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy.
