Investigation of the role of common carp microbiota in immunomodulation induced by B-glucans. We hypothesized that common carp intestinal microbiota would be able to ferment B-glucans and through the produced metabolites (SCFAs) affect the host. First we characterised active (by 16S rRNA) naive common carp microbiota to provide insights whether microbes with B-glucan fermenting capacities would be present. Subsequently, we performed further analyses (e.g. in vitro fermentation, SCFA titrations), all suggesting indeed a role for microbial metabolites in the immunomodulation associated with B-glucan supplementation of common carp.
