Digital Archive from an Archaeological Excavation at Oldway Lane and Station Road, Chudleigh, March to October 2017

This collection comprises images, reports and site records from an archaeological excavation undertaken by AC archaeology on land at Station Hill, Chudleigh between March and October 2017. The excavation revealed an enclosure of later Middle Bronze Age date. The ditch for the enclosure was not a full circuit, with instead part of it defined by a spring gully. A pit filled with charcoal-rich deposits external to the enclosure was radiocarbon dated to the late to post-Roman period and a line of 18 large postholes is of late medieval to post-medieval date and probably mark the position of a cloth-drying rack. The large assemblage of finds is overwhelmingly of Bronze Age date and is described in detail and included Trevisker ware pottery and a rare unfinished axe hammer. The geoarchaeological deposits within the palaeochannel and archaeobotanical remains from various features are also described in detail.
