QAQC of Snodgrass Elevation transect environmental data

This data set “QC_snod_environmental_data_AS_09_23.csv” is the quality-controlled version of the “RAW_snod_environmental_data_09_23.csv” data from the data logger boxes on Snodgrass Mountain June 2021 – July 2023. This includes data from the meteorological sensor (Cambell Sci. ClimaVUETM50) on top of a 3-meter tripod, automated CO2 concentration probes (Eosense [MSC1] eosGP; 3-sensor profile), soil temperature (thermistors), and soil moisture (swc) measurements (Campbell Sci. CS655) all at 5,15 and 50 cm depth. In 2022, a fourth CO2 probe was installed in the surface litter at each site. All CO2 measurements are pressure and temperature corrected with the data logger code. The first row is the simplified names of the data columns, the second row is the descriptive names of the data columns, and the third row is the units of the measurements. Below is the description of each quality control action implemented in this data set by the site and incoming data stream. Note these are by the probe and not specific columns. If a quality control action was taken, all columns in relation to that probe are influenced by the action.<br>All surface probe (CO2_4) data is multiplied by 1.11 from an in-lab calibration curve measured before installation in the field. Lower Aspen Site 5cm CO2 probe: For the 2022 growing season, I put the 5 cm probe to NAN’s. It was significantly lower than in 2021, after the spring melt-off, and never seemed to bounce back. I replaced the probe in late October. 50cm CO2 probe: The 50 cm probe data is set to NAN’s from November 2022 through the 23 winter. The data was scrambled. I took the probe out in the spring of 2023. 15cm CO2 probe: I have set the 15 cm probe data to NaN’s from Late March 2023 to late July. I did a field "reset" in the first week of June 2023, and the initial data appears reliable. Surface CO2 probe: Surface probes were installed in the spring of 2022. Middle Aspen Site: 50cm CO2 probe: I have set the 50cm probe data to NAN’s from May 22, 2023, because the data became scrambled. This probe has not been replaced. 15cm CO2 probe: The 15 cm CO2 probe is set to NAN’s from 02/02/2023 because the data were scrambled. This probe was replaced with probe:(GP20200067) in late June for it to go back out a few weeks later. All data from 02/02/23 is now at NAN. 5cm CO2 probe: 5cm probe is set to NANs from 02-18-2023 until I reinstalled a new-old probe:(Gp20200067) in late June. Middle Conifer: 50cm CO2 probe: The 50 cm probe is set to NAN’s starting 12/29/22 because the data became scrambled. I took out the probe in late June 2023. As well as several CO2 values that were clear outliers were also put as NANs. 15 cm CO2 probe: The 15 cm probe went out in the winter of 2023, with values set to NANs. This probe was replaced by Gp Probe:(GP20200103) in Late June 23. 5cm CO2 probe: The 5 cm probe had a handful of single data points greater than 2 SD of the mean, filtered to NANs. Also, in July of 2023, the data became scrambled, and all data past July 10th is NAN’s.Barometric Pressure: &lt;10 outliers spread out through the whole data set that was greater than 900 mbar for Barometric pressure. Considering this is well outside the mean (~700), I put those values to NAN.Vapor pressure: There were &lt;10 values spread out through the whole data set that were greater than 25+ mbar for vapor pressure. Considering this, i.e., well outside the mean, I put those values to NANS.A handful of values from the Met station in air temp, wind speed, and Solar radiation were not physically possibly, or at least yet recorded on Earth. These are NAN.High Conifer: 50 cm CO2 probe The probe went out during the 21-22 winter. All values were put to NAN. We put in a new probe in the Spring of 2022. We then moved that probe to the 5 cm position in late June 2023.
