Data from: Warming accelerates Chinese fir root turnover and alters root production distribution in response to soil temperature and moisture

This dataset is provided as a single Excel (.xlsx) file containing four sheets, which underpin the figures presented in the article. Below is a brief summary of the dataset contents, contextualized within the experimental procedures and results. This experiment employed a randomized complete block design with two treatments: soil warming (ambient +4°C) and control (ambient). The design comprised five blocks, with two plots per block, resulting in a total of 10 plots (15 m×15 m each). In this dataset, "Block" denotes the five replicate blocks, and "Plot" denotes the two plots nested within each block. Sheet 1 contains daily soil temperature (°C) and soil moisture (Vol%) measured across four soil layers (0–10, 10–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm) in the warming and control treatments of a young Chinese fir plantation. Values are presented as means and standard error (SE). The sample sizes are as follows: 0–10 cm, n = 5; 10–20 cm, n = 3; 20–40 cm, n = 3; 40–60 cm, n = 3 (see Materials and Methods for more details). Sheet 2 provides monthly precipitation (mm) and air temperature (°C) recorded at the experimental site from January 2016 to December 2019. Sheet 3 contains annual data on fine root production (FRP), fine root mortality (FRM), fine root length standing crop (RLSC), and fine root turnover rate (FRT) in the 0–70 cm soil profile in the warming and control treatments of a young Chinese fir plantation. Sheet 4 provides monthly observed and model‑predicted data on fine root production (FRP), fine root mortality (FRM), and the vertical distribution coefficient (β) of monthly fine root production (β of FRP) across the 0–70 cm profile in a young Chinese fir plantation under control and warming treatments. Predictions were generated from models that included soil temperature and moisture from the 0–10 cm layer as covariates. Note: β values were not estimated for December 2019 in three control plots and two warming plots, as fine root production was only present in a subset of soil layers, making the exponential decay model inapplicable. These values are denoted as "NA" in the table.
