Stratified three-stage probability design, with facility selection in the first two stages. The INVENTORY OF LONG-TERM CARE PLACES, 1986 (ICPSR 9169) served as the sampling frame for the 1987 sample of long-term care facilities. Of the 1,714 facilities originally sampled, 1,581 were found to be eligible, and 95 percent of those responded to the questionnaire. The sampling yielded 810 nursing homes and 691 facilities for the mentally retarded. Other long-term care facilities, such as psychiatric, chronic disease, and rehabilitation hospitals, were excluded from the 1987 sample.采用分层三阶段概率抽样设计，前两阶段完成抽样机构的筛选。1986年《长期护理机构名录》（ICPSR 9169）作为1987年长期护理机构样本的抽样框。初始抽样的1714家机构中，1581家符合纳入资格，其中95%完成了问卷回复。本次抽样最终纳入810家养老院与691家智障人士服务机构。其余类型的长期护理机构，如精神病院、慢性病医院及康复医院等，均未被纳入1987年样本。
