This is the first record of the genus from the Malagasy region. P. tani is widespread throughout western Madagascar but rare in collections. Collection data indicate that this species nests and forages in soil or litter in a range of habitats from montane forest to dry spiny bush. P. tani is most similar in size and general shape to P. guineensis found in western and central Africa.
