The goal of the NEON surface water metagenomic sequencing project is to track changes in the diversity, composition, and functional potential of microbiota in planktonic aquatic ecosystems through space and time. NEON collects water column microbes from various depths at numerous sites distributed across the United States. Total genomic DNA is extracted and used for shotgun metagenomic sequencing.
