VPRS 12067 Wire Netting Advances Files [SAMPLE ONLY RETAINED]

The Land Act 1905 established the Land Purchase and Management Board (VA 2266). The Board was authorised to re-purchase land to sub-divide into closely settled communities. These sub-divisions were made available for lease as farm allotments, agricultural labourers allotments and workmens home allotments.The terms of the closer settlement lease required the lessee to fence the land, destroy vermin and noxious weeds and some leases required the tenant to erect a dwelling on the land within one year. The Board was authorised to make advances to closer settlement leaseholders to assist them to make the required improvements.Wire Netting advances were to facilitate the eradication of vermin on settled land. Closer Settlement tenants could apply for advances to enable them to purchase fencing material to build vermin proof fences. Provisions for this were made in the Closer Settlement Act 1904 and also in the Rabbit Suppression Act 1880 and the Wire Netting Act 1928.VPRS 12067 Wire Netting Advances Files [Sample Only Retained] provides evidence of the function of the Closer Settlement Board (previously known as the Lands Purchase Management Board) (VA 2266) in advancing money and fencing material to closer settlement land holders specifically for the purpose of vermin destruction. The series in custody is only a small portion of the Wire Netting Advances Files that were created originally. The location of the remainder of the series is unknown as at September 1999. The method for selection of this sample is also unknown.This series was previously registered as a unit of VPRS 752 Miscellaneous.
