VPRS 17416 Daily Water Level Reading

Prior to the early 1880s measurement of water course levels were not carried out in a systematic way in Victoria. Following the 1881-85 Royal Commission on Water Supply, continuous measurements were progressively taken on a number of Victorian water courses. This work was initially undertaken by the Victorian Water Supply Department (VA 2787) until the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission (VA 723) assumed the function in 1906. Since that time measurements have been undertaken for the government by a succession of agencies until the function was privatised in 1994 and Thiess Services Pty Ltd assumed the role of taking measurements. In some areas of the state the State Electricity Commission of Victoria [SECV] (VA 1002) also carried out measurements of watercourse levels in addition to the state's water authority. In a limited number of areas the SECV was the sole authority taking these measurements.The folders in this series contain daily continuous readings of water level data at a particular site on a Victorian water course, known as a gauging station. The readings in this series relate to gauging stations under the control of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria [VA 1002].In some instances prevailing weather conditions are also recorded.
