THE ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY, SELF-EFFICACY, AND MOTIVATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS' PARTICIPATORY MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES

Higher education institutions increasingly expect students to move beyond passive learning and take an active role in classroom, project, and institutional decision-making. This transformation depends not only on formal opportunities for participation but on psychological conditions that make genuine engagement possible. This paper offers a theoretical and analytical review of recent literature examining how psychological safety, self-efficacy, and intrinsic or academic motivation jointly shape the development of participatory management competencies among university students. Drawing on peer-reviewed studies published mainly between 2020 and 2026, the paper explains how psychological safety enables students to express opinions and take initiative without fear of criticism, how self-efficacy provides the confidence needed to sustain participatory behavior, and how motivation supplies direction and persistence to participatory effort. The analysis further shows that these three determinants interact rather than operate independently, mutually reinforcing one another over time. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for cultivating psychologically safe, confidence-building, and autonomy-supportive learning environments that transform students from passive recipients into responsible participants in university decision-making.
