Dataset and Code for - Pay-to-stay drives the evolution of helping independent of kin selection in anemonefish societies

This repository contains the datasets and code associated with the manuscript: Kirstin Gaffney, Megan E. Bartlett, Theresa Rueger (2026). Pay-to-stay drives the evolution of helping independent of kin selection in anemonefish societies. Behavioral Ecology [Manuscipt Accepted] This version includes minor revisions and updates following acceptance for publication in Behavioral Ecology. The dataset and code were archived on Zenodo prior to journal publication to ensure accessibility and reproducibility. Datasets included: (1) PTS_social_raw.csv: Raw social interactions event data collected using BORIS software. (2) PTS_helping_raw.csv: Raw helping behaviour event data collected using BORIS software. (3) PTS_field.csv: field metadata for each anemonefish group observed, providing ecological, temporal, and group composition context. (4) PTS_baseline_helping.csv: baseline helping behaviour (as proportion of time visible) by rank 3 individuals, including anemone maintenance, territory defence against predators and defence against food competitors. (5) PTS_baseline_social.csv: baseline social behaviour (as proportion of time visible) in rank 3 individuals, including aggression received and proactive submissive behaviour. (6) PTS_experiment.csv: helping behaviour and social behaviour (as proportion of time visible) in rank 3 individuals for each experimental condition. Variable definitions are provided in the attached README.md file. Code included: (1) PTS_analysis_full_script.R: full R script to generate all analyses and figures in the manuscript
