Replication Data for: Military Influence in Civilian Institutions: Analyzing Ethnic Group Political and Economic Exclusion

This study investigates how military influence within civilian government affects the political and economic exclusion of ethnic minorities. Drawing on institutional theory, it argues that heightened military influence in civilian institutions exacerbates ethnic discrimination through two mechanisms: institutional entrenchment and economic co-optation. Employing global panel data from 157 countries spanning 1950–2006, the analysis integrates logistic regression and country-level random effects models, using data from the All Minorities at Risk (AMAR) and Ethnic Power Relations (EPR) datasets. Findings consistently indicate that increased military influence significantly correlates with higher political and economic exclusion of ethnic minorities. These results remain robust across various model specifications and alternative measurements of military involvement. By identifying military dominance as a structural driver of ethnic marginalization, the study advances theoretical discussions on civil-military relations and institutional inclusivity, providing critical empirical evidence for policymakers aiming to promote inclusive governance and democratic resilience.
