Introducing the Global Journal of Black Sexuality and Gender Studies

Despite the value of knowledge produced from the Global South, very few spaces have been devoted to sharing ideas and highlighting knowledge created by Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (BLGBTQ+) scholars. This article, therefore, examines epistemic racism and heterosexism in academia and publishing. It discusses the intersections of race, sexual orientation and gender identity and the consequential isms that are foundational to the knowledge structures of the major publishing houses in the Global North and academic publishing. The Global North monopolises the canon of knowledge, rendering knowledge created from the South inferior. Anecdotal evidence is employed to broaden our understanding of how power structures maintain White supremacy in publishing. To bridge the gap, we propose the Global Journal of Black Sexuality and Gender Studies, a progressive interdisciplinary journal dedicated to exchanging the latest BLGBTQ+ knowledge and ideas.
