(A) In agreement with recent electron cryotomography experiments [30, 31], we allow for additional CheW-only linkers (yellow) connecting two TDs (black and blue). (B) Exemplary ensemble of complexes in the cytoplasmic membrane. The two linkers are represented by solid (–CheW–CheA2–CheW–) and dashed (–CheW–CheW2–CheW–) lines. Active and inactive TDs are shown in red and blue, respectively. Each linker between active TDs contributes an additional coupling energy J.
