Aspergillus welwitschiae is a fungus that occurs as a saprotroph on diverse food and feed crops. This species is a member of Aspergillus section Nigri and is closely related A niger. Both A. niger and A. welwitschiae exist as mixtures of individuals that differ in ability to produce fumonisins and ochratoxins, two families of mycotoxins. Most isolates of these species that have been examined produce neither mycotoxin family. A. welwitschiae strain ITEM 11945 is atypical in that it can produce both fumonisins and ochratoxins.
