NRS-12932 | Original Prints of Photographs used in NSW trains

These photographs were used to decorate the carriage interiors of country trains, and feature a wide variety of images including rural streetscapes and scenic views, historic buildings, coastal scenes, Sydney metropolitan beaches, dams, snowfields, and photographs of birds and animals at the Taronga Park Zoological Gardens and Koala Park. In 1935 a Department of Railways special committee began a detailed survey of the more than 20,000 photographs exhibited in the carriages of country trains at that time, and invited submissions of new photographs for display from civic authorities and community organisations. (1) By 1938 a total of 3,614 new photographs had been installed in country train carriages (2), with 17,000 new photographs in place by 1943 as work progressed on the project. (3)References 1.
