Polyploid species often originated recurrently or independently. While the recurrent formation of a single polyploid species has been well studied, we yet have little knowledge about to what extent distinct allotetraploid species of independent origins differ in gene expression? The tetraploid yarrow species Achillea alpina and A. wilsoniana arose independently from allopolyploidization, providing a solid basis for investigating global patterns of transgenerational gene expression influenced by hybridization and polyploidy.
